Course Description

James Higgins of RDH introduces the compliance implications of BC Buildings Code 2024 overheating protection requirements and ways to streamline the process. The session presents compliance pathways for both Part 9 and Part 3 buildings. System types, design considerations, and sizing requirements are reviewed, along with code references, design tools, and enforcement challenges. The presentation emphasizes the responsibility of local governments to update permit checklists, submission requirements, and inspection protocols to reflect these new code obligations. The session concludes with practical guidance and resources to help building officials and builders develop a defensible, consistent, and safety-focused compliance process for overheating protection.

By the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the life safety risks associated with indoor overheating and the motivation behind new requirements.
  • Evaluate the suitability of various compliance pathways, including those requiring professional submissions.
  • Describe the critical role of local compliance processes, including plan reviews, permit submissions, and inspections.
  • Apply available tools and new resources to support compliance process updates.
