Course Description

Rob Pope of Ecolighten and Todd Backus of the Thermal Environmental Comfort Association (TECA) presented on best practices for HVAC design, sizing, installation, and commissioning in Part 9 residential buildings. The session explored current industry standards, including CSA SPE-17:23 “HVAC Guide for Part 9 Homes,” equipment selection strategies aligned with the BC Building Code and decarbonization goals, and the importance of integrated design processes to improve performance, energy efficiency, and occupant comfort. The course provided practical, real-world examples and exercises to support both new construction and renovation projects, while building industry capacity and technical confidence in advanced HVAC practices.

Rob Pope

Rob Pope is an HVAC design engineer and pioneer of designing energy-efficient systems such as condensing gas furnaces and boilers, HRVs, heat pumps and more. Rob has served as an executive member of the HVAC industry associations (HVCI & TECA), advocating for higher standards and better education for its members.

Todd Backus

P.Eng, COO, TECA

Todd Backus has worked in the HVAC industry since 2003. He completed his red-seal ticket as a sheet metal worker in 2009. As the owner/operator of Backus Mechanical, he specialized in forced air system installation & design for custom homes. In 2019, Todd graduated from BCIT with a degree in mechanical engineering. Afterwards, he worked as a mechanical consultant for Rocky Point Engineering designing HVAC, plumbing, & fire suppression systems. In 2023, Todd completed his Professional Engineering certification and joined TECA as the Manager of Programs Development.
